New system allows consumers to report unsafe products in UAE

UAE residents can now check information if a product in the market is safe for consumption before purchasing them through a system released by the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) on Sunday, October 14.

Launched during the GITEX Technology Week 2018 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the system can be accessed via a smart application and website, enabling consumers to inform regulators of products deemed unsafe or withdrawn from the market across the Emirates.

Prior testing of the new system was conducted by the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council in the nation’s capital a few years ago.

Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of ESMA, said that the introduction of a system that protects consumers and improves the availability of services to members of the public at the federal level serves the country’s objectives to ensure quality control on products available in the markets.

Abdullah Al Maeeni, ESMA’s Director-General, affirmed that the launch of the system has social, economic and environmental dimensions and benefits.

“It will build consumer confidence in the UAE by continuously auditing the quality of products and services,” he explained, adding that it also improves the national economy with regards to facilitating the circulation of products conforming to the UAE’s standards.
