Dubai hailed as world’s most cosmopolitan city

Dubai is once again hailed as the world’s most cosmopolitan city with foreign-born citizens making up the most of the city’s total population.

In a report published by global consultancy McKinsey & Company, Dubai’s residents come from more than 200 countries and speak more than 140 different languages, making Dubai the most cosmopolitan city in the world.

Among the languages spoken by Dubai residents are Arabic, English, Tagalog, Persian, Hindi, French, Urdu, Bengali, and Chinese, among others.

For instance, there are 421,626 documented overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Dubai, as per the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Following Dubai as most cosmopolitan city with high percentage of foreign-born citizens are Brussels (62 percent), Toronto (46 percent), Auckland (39 percent), Los Angeles (39 percent), and Sydney (39 percent).

Overall, a total of 13 cities have populations with at least 25 percent being foreign-born.

According to the United Nations, 55 percent of the global population currently lives in cities. By 2050, that number is expected to reach 68 percent, which means an additional 2.5 billion people will reside in urban areas.
