New smart tunnel installed at Dubai Airport for its pilot phase

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) on Wednesday, October 10, has launched a new technology allowing passengers of Dubai International Airport to enter the country without having to show their passports.

The pilot phase of Smart Tunnel was installed at Dubai Airport’s Terminal 3 and will cater to first class and business class passengers, reported Khaleej Times.

Through biometrics and face recognition technology, the Smart Tunnel will conduct passport control procedures by doing a full body scan search of passengers without the need for them to have their passports stamped. The procedure can be finished in as fast as 10 seconds.

Passengers will simply pass through the airport without doing anything. The technology is still in its trial phase and is considered as the first of its kind in the world.

Smart Tunnel was introduced at the Gitex Technology Week event last year to hasten airport procedures amid the rising number of passengers arriving and departing Dubai.
