No matter where we are in the world, Filipinos are some of the most active social media users. Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the UAE, in particular, use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to communicate with their families and share images of their experiences abroad.
However, using social media comes with a responsibility. In the UAE, posting of defamatory or insulting messages is punishable by law.
Recently, an Arab woman is facing charges of defamation and violation of cyberlaws before the Abu Dhabi Misdemeanour Court after allegedly posting insulting and defamatory messages on Facebook against her former husband, reported Khaleej Times.
In the post, the woman accused his former husband of negligence resulting to the death of their son. Their son died of electrocution at their home in Abu Dhabi a few years ago.
The woman also accused his former husband of being involved in witchcraft activities.
His former husband filed a case against the Arab woman stating that his reputation as a teacher in Abu Dhabi for 20 years was tarnished by the malicious allegations. He also demanded Dh21,000 from his former wife for temporary damages.
