DUBAI: The Court of First Instance has sentenced two men to a year’s time in jail after they embezzled an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Dubai.
The two Pakistani suspects, aged 32 and 35, scammed the 47-year-old Filipino and defrauded him of cash amounting to Dh33,000, reported Khaleej Times.
The Filipino, who works at a veterinary clinic, said that a man, who claimed to be an employee from his telecom provider, broke him the news that he won Dh500,000.
The defendants then asked for the Filipino’s personal details and bank details adding that he needed to give them money for the supposed processing of the necessary documents to claim the prize.
After getting the money from the victim, the two Pakistani men bought several products online which were delivered to them by express courier.
They used and presented an Emirates ID belonging to a compatriot, and faked the signature of the real owner of the ID on the receipt forms of the courier.
The Court of First Instance charged the two men with using others’ authentic identification document, impersonating a public employee, forgery and use of forged document and fraud. They will serve one year in jail and will immediately be deported afterwards.
During investigations, it was found that the two suspects had several other criminal records.
The two men may appeal the court ruling within 15 days.
