OFW’s overstaying fine worth Dh1.08 million waived thanks to amnesty

by | News

An overseas Filipino worker who has been staying illegally in the UAE for over three decades has had her overstay fines waived off at the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Ras Al Khaimah.

The Filipina first came to the country on a visit visa in 1985 and worked as a domestic helper for two years, Khaleej Times quoted Brigadier Hassan Sultan Al Nuaimi, executive director of GDRFA-RAK, as saying.

According to the report, the Filipina turned into an illegal resident after working as a household maid and overstayed in the UAE since then.

After 31 years of overstaying, she was supposed to pay a fine worth Dh1.08 million or approximately P15.6 million, but all of it was waived off thanks to the ongoing amnesty scheme.

The UAE General Amnesty scheme for overstaying expatriates and other residency violators officially started its three-month long initiative on August 1 and will last until October 31. It will enable anyone living and working illegally in the country to stay or leave without hiding or fear.
