Millions of Filipinos are expected to benefit from the proposed National ID as President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law the Philippine System Identification Act (PhilSys) at Malacañang on Monday, August 6.
Through the PhilSys, public and private transactions would be simplified, efficient, and transparent, said Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
Aside from the basic information such as name, sex, birthday and address, the PhilSys will also contain the biometric information of the holder through a QR code.
Here are some of the benefits of the national ID:
1- The ID will serve as an official government-issued identification document
2- It can be used when applying for a passport and driver’s license
3- It will reduce the cost of having to apply for multiple valid IDs
4- It can be used for voting registration and identification
5- Opening bank accounts and tax-related transactions
The IDs will be implemented through the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) which will generate a random permanent identification number for every Filipino
Roque added that it will be harder to commit identity theft or fraud through the centralized system
The PhilSys aims to make it easier for Philippine citizens and residents to apply for government benefits and social services.
