A 15-year-old student in Cawayan, Masbate was killed by suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) on September 16 in an attack against soldiers who were constructing a daycare center.
The 15-year-old victim, identified as Vincent Pekiro, was then watching soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Battalion rehabilitating a daycare center in Barang Libertad.
Captain Joash Pramis, spokesperson of the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division, said a number of rebels who are alleged members of NPA opened fire at the troops at around 4:30 P.M. He said Pekiro was hit from the bullets fired from the rebels.
“According to the troops, they heard five shots and the first one hit the boy. He was watching what the soldiers were doing at that time,” GMA News quoted Pramis.
The troops fired back at the rebels to protect several other civilians inside the daycare center.
Pramis said the troops were sent back to search for the rebels who opened fire and killed Pekiro.
