3 dead, 5 wounded in shooting at Tacloban school

Three people were killed and five others wounded in a shooting inside San Jose National High School in Tacloban City on Monday morning, police said.

The shooting occurred at around 9 a.m. inside the school in Barangay San Jose, according to the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8).

Police arrested one suspect at the scene, while a second suspect fled and remains at large.

Authorities said the casualty figures were based on an initial investigation by the Tacloban City Police Office. The identities of the victims and the suspect in custody have not yet been released.

The injured were brought to nearby hospitals for treatment.

“All necessary measures are being undertaken to ensure the immediate arrest of the remaining suspect and maintain public safety and security,” PRO-8 said in a statement.

The Tacloban City Police Office condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the victims, their families and the San Jose National High School community.

“Those responsible will be held accountable under the full force of the law,” the police said.

Authorities said responding officers were immediately dispatched after receiving reports of the shooting and assisted the wounded before they were transported to medical facilities.

PRO-8 also deployed additional police personnel around the campus to ensure the safety of students, teachers, parents and nearby residents while the manhunt continues.

Following the incident, the Tacloban City government suspended classes at San Jose National High School, San Jose Central School and Manlurip Elementary School.

Police urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information as the investigation continues.

The Department of Education has yet to issue a statement on the incident.
