Filipino educator receives MBE from Prince William at Windsor Castle

Filipino educator and UK headteacher Edison David received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) medal from Prince William during a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, May 13.

David earned a place in the United Kingdom’s 2026 honors list for his contributions to British society through education.

Describing the moment as deeply meaningful, David said receiving the award was “an extraordinary and deeply humbling experience.”

“This recognition reflects the collective efforts of the schools, colleagues, pupils, and communities I have had the privilege to work with throughout my career,” David said in a press statement.

“I hope this moment inspires Filipinos around the world and highlights the important contribution our community continues to make internationally,” he added.

The MBE is among the United Kingdom’s most prestigious honors and is awarded to individuals who have made major contributions in education, public service, charity, and community leadership.

David, who hails from Tarlac, was among more than 100 individuals recognized in the 2026 King’s honors list.

Also honored this year were Hollywood stars Cynthia Erivo, who received an MBE, and Idris Elba, who was awarded a knighthood.

David said he intentionally wore a traditional barong from Lumban, Laguna during the ceremony to proudly represent his Filipino roots.

“Wearing a barong from Lumban was especially important to me because I wanted to proudly represent Filipino heritage during such a significant occasion,” he said.

Beyond his work in the United Kingdom, David is also involved in an initiative being developed by the Philippine Department of Education aimed at addressing the country’s literacy challenges highlighted by EDCOM 2 findings.

The recognition marks another milestone for Filipinos making significant contributions abroad, particularly in the field of education and community leadership.
