Philippines cuts power use by 145.43 MW during Earth Hour 2026

The Department of Energy said the Philippines recorded a 145.43-megawatt reduction in electricity consumption during the observance of Earth Hour 2026 on Saturday evening.

In a statement released Sunday, the DOE said the reduction in electricity demand was recorded from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 28.

The biggest decrease came from Luzon with 75.25 MW, followed by Visayas with 66.6 MW and Mindanao with 3.58 MW.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the annual observance serves as a reminder that the way people use energy has an impact on everyone.

“Earth Hour reminds us that the way energy is used affects everyone, and it reveals not only what we do, but the kind of future we wish to achieve for our nation and our planet,” Marcos said.

He also called on Filipinos to remain united in ensuring that the country continues to move toward a more hopeful and sustainable future.

Sharon Garin said that while Earth Hour is largely symbolic, it carries a deeper message of encouraging lasting changes in people’s daily habits.

“Earth Hour showed that when Filipinos stand as one, we can accomplish a meaningful reduction in energy consumption. More importantly, this is a reminder that conserving energy should not last for only one hour, but should be practiced every day,” Garin said.

The DOE urged the public to continue observing energy-saving practices beyond Earth Hour, both at home and in the workplace.

According to the department, sustained energy conservation can help lower electricity costs while supporting the country’s goals of energy security, affordability and environmental protection.
