The Fujairah Municipality’s health control department has fined five hair salons and issued warnings to 20 others for operating in unsanitary conditions.
The authority said in a statement the officers visited 230 salons for women and children since Ramadan began to ensure that customers were not at risk of catching an infection.
Officials said that bacterial, fungal and viral infections, such as hepatitis C, staph infections and warts can spread for lack of health and safety standards.

The inspectors also checked use of expired and harmful chemicals and products for use in beauty treatments and seized over 10kg of expired cosmetics.
Staff at salons need to obtain health and fitness certificates, wear uniforms and maintain a good appearance and follow personal hygiene, the statement added.
Inspections were also aimed to check that cleaners were available during evening shifts.
