The Philippines’ 10th sportsperson qualified for the Tokyo Olympics when Margielyn Didal, reigning Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games skateboarding champ, ended with a semifinal finish in the ongoing Street World Championships-Olympics Qualification event in Rome.
While Didal, 22, secured her place in the Olympic games that begin in July, the official announcement is expected to be made by the World Skate on June 30 once all the qualifying meets are concluded, Skate Pilipinas stated on its Facebook page on June 5.
Didal’s 17th place finish with 19.00 points in the Qualifying rounds did not get her a place in the final, but ensured her being in the top 20 world rankings.
With points in the World qualifier being added to the skaters’ world ranking — based on their international meet performances over the past years — Didal, who was 14th in world rankings before Rome, was placed higher than the cutoff mark.
While Japanese Yumeka Oda and Momiji Nishaya finished 1-2 finish in the Olympic qualifying meet with 40.22 and 34.11 points respectively, their compatriot Kaya Isa was placed fourth (32.92) behind Netherland’s Roos Zwetsloot (33.00). Didal had garnered 27,560 points in World Skateboarding Rankings. (AW)
