Emirates becomes world’s first airline to cover passengers COVID-19 expenses

Emirates on Thursday announced that it will cover its passengers, flying to any destination in any travel class, for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related medical expenses and quarantine costs free of charge—the first airline in the world to do so.

The airline said it will cover medical expenses of its passengers up to EUR 150,000 (AED 640,000) as well as quarantine costs of EUR 100 (AED 367) per day for 14 days, should they be diagnosed with COVID-19 during their travel.

This move follows the directive of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, according to Emirates Group Chairman and Chief Executive H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

“Under the directive of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed [bin Rashid], UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Emirates is proud to lead the way in boosting confidence for international travel. We know people are yearning to fly as borders around the world gradually re-open, but they are seeking flexibility and assurances should something unforeseen happen during their travel,” said the Emirates Group Chairman.

In a statement on its website, the airline said this cover is immediately effective for customers flying on Emirates until October 31, 2020 and is valid for 31 days from their flight.

“This means Emirates customers can continue to benefit from the added assurance of this cover, even if they travel onwards to another city after arriving at their Emirates destination,” it said.

Customers do not need to register or fill in any forms before they travel.

For any customer who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 during their travel, a dedicated hotline +971 4 2708825 is available 24/7 to avail of assistance and cover.
