The ingenuity of Filipinos has once again gone viral on social media as a café in the Philippines showed that they are now using new biodegradable straws made out of coconut leaves!

“I got this idea when we visited Correigidor and I’m very impressed. 👏👏👏🌴🌴😘 LUKAY straw is easy to make and decomposable. I hope other restaurants will also be inspired to use this brilliant idea. 😊😘,” said the admin behind the page.

The straws used by the Café Editha based in Dapa, Surigao del Norte were called ‘lukay’ – a local term for the palm leaves.

Café Editha Manager Sarah Tiu shared that she got the idea from that visit and decided to recreate the straws to make her café more environmentally friendly. as per her interview with Inquirer.

“We bought fresh buko and they just cut lukay, then made it into straws. So we asked them to teach us [because] we were very impressed with the idea,” Tiu added.

The post took off with positive responses from the netizens as they appreciated how Tiu’s cafe is creating a movement that will hopefully inspire more restaurants to reduce their usage of plastic.

The now-viral post has 27,000+ shares with 6.4k reactions and 700+ comments.
