Immigration intercepts 9 trafficking victims at NAIA

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) intercepted nine suspected victims of human trafficking who are about to board their plane at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

BI port operations division chief Grifton Medina said that the passengers were about to board their flight to Taipei which will connect them to South Korea when they were intercepted by the immigration.

Medina said that the passengers disguised as tourists who would visit an exhibition show in South Korea before admitting that they were going to Korea for work.

The passengers said they were hired as orange pickers in a plantation on Jeju Island with a promised monthly salary of Php65,000.

“They admitted that they were illegally recruited to work as orange pickers in a plantation on Jeju Island without working permits,” Medina said.

The passengers were sent to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for further investigation.
