Al Qattan mulls to encourage followers to boycott brands that cut ties with her

Kuwaiti blogger Sondos Al Qattan continues to stand her ground and remains unapologetic for her remarks towards Filipino domestic workers.

Al Qattan found herself in hot water after she previously questioned the Kuwaiti government’s reforms on the kafala system which now allows Filipino domestic workers to have the right to days off and possession of their own passports.

The Kuwaiti beauty blogger said through social media that the reform was “pathetic”, adding that she doesn’t want to hire Filipino domestic workers anymore.

Al Qattan sparked online uproar with many netizens accusing her of “promoting slavery”.

Since then, several beauty and cosmetic brands that used to be associated with, such as MAC Cosmetics, Phyto, Shiseido, Max Factor Arabia, Chelsea Beautique, and M. Micallef, have severed ties with her after the backlash she has received.

Arabian Business reported that a video spreading on Twitter shows Al Qattan hitting back at her critics saying “foreign media campaign” are spreading more outrage over her remarks than the humanitarian crisis in other Middle Eastern countries.

She also said that the attacks thrown to her are “attacks on Islam, the Hijab and Kuwait”.

The Kuwaiti social media star also threatened to expose the brands that have severed ties with her, adding that she will encourage her 116,000 Twitter followers and 2.3 million Instagram followers to boycott such brands.

While some beauty products have decided to fire Al Qattan, it seems that there are still some brands who would like to work with her since she posted a photo on her Instagram account promoting the products of Al Jazeera Perfumes, a Kuwait-based company.
