A Filipina, who almost died in the hands of her abusive husband, is all for the legalization of divorce in the Philippines.
Krista Dador, 28, has decided to run away from her abusive husband of 8 years, reported Reuters.
She married her husband after she became pregnant at 18.
“Sometimes I want to end it all,” said Dador, who currently washes her neighbor’s laundry to earn money.
The lack of support from Dador’s husband forced her to look for a job in the Middle East hoping to give a better life for her children.
“This is a risk I’m taking. I want my children to be in school because I was not – and because I want to earn money to pay for my annulment,” she added.
The couple, remains married on paper as they cannot obtain legal separation or annulment in the country because it is too expensive.
“I almost died from my husband’s beating and yet I have to convince the courts why I want my marriage dissolved. The process is too tedious,” Dador said.
Dador’s story is only one of the many cases of women who are forced to stay in unhappy and abusive relationships due to the high cost of obtaining annulment in the Philippines.
In March, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading the bill that seeks to introduce divorce and dissolution of marriage in the country.
The Philippines is one of only 2 states – along with the Vatican — without a divorce law.
