Empty grocery shelves and long queues of shoppers were the scenes at supermarkets in Qatar on Monday as neighboring countries cut diplomatic relations with Doha and closed their borders to Qataris.
Expats and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) , who also joined other Qataris in buying groceries to stock food, took photos of the supermarket scenes and showed them to reporters.
Eva Tobaji, an expat resident in Doha, described the scenes as “chaos” that he has never seen before, according to ABS-CBN News.
The diplomatic row is impact the food supply to Qatar. Nearly all food in the country are imported from neighbors Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which accused Doha of supporting terror groups. Thousands of trucks carrying food supplies for Qatar are reportedly stuck at the border with Saudi Arabia, which banned shipping to and from Qatar.
Qatar’s government, however, assured residents and expats that its seaports and airports remain open to trade and travel with other countries.
