UAE accuses Iran of threatening maritime security, urges UN action

The United Arab Emirates has accused Iran of undermining maritime security and disrupting the global economy through actions in the Strait of Hormuz, while calling on the United Nations Security Council to uphold international law and take stronger action to preserve international peace and security.

Speaking during a Security Council debate on the United Nations Charter, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN Mohamed Abushahab said freedom of navigation remains a fundamental principle of international law and warned against threats to critical global trade routes.

“After eight decades of international cooperation in pursuit of peace and a shared global order, the United Nations Charter remains our primary shield against global disorder and the cornerstone of international cooperation,” Abushahab told the council.

The UAE envoy said lasting peace and prosperity can only be achieved through dialogue and de-escalation, not confrontation. He argued that regional instability has been fueled by policies that support armed proxy groups and violate international norms.

Abushahab also accused Iran of carrying out attacks against civilian infrastructure in the UAE over the past three months, including commercial ports, airports, energy facilities, and communications networks.

He further alleged that Iran had obstructed navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, describing such actions as violations of international law that pose risks to both maritime security and the global economy.

The ambassador also cited a recent drone attack launched from Iraqi territory targeting the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, calling it a dangerous escalation and a serious breach of international law.

Abushahab said the UAE reserves its right to defend its territory and citizens in accordance with international law. He also called for accountability for attacks on civilian infrastructure and urged the Security Council to fully enforce its resolutions.

“The credibility of the international system depends on our willingness to uphold its rules when they are violated,” he said.

The UAE concluded its remarks by urging the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities under the UN Charter and act decisively to safeguard international peace, security, and the rules-based international order.
