May 9 polls will proceed despite COVID-19 surge – Comelec

The Commission on Elections maintains that the May 9 elections will proceed even if there is a spike in COVID-19 cases.

“I don’t think we can postpone elections. We have already prepared for any eventualities. We have the supplies ready. We have already trained all our election workers,” Comelec Commissioner Aimee Ferolino said Thursday.

“Even if yung ‘yung mga may spike, the committee on new normal has prepared on how to respond to that. Sabi nga nila, kahit anong mangyari, we will have elections,” she added.

The committee is tasked to make sure the polls will not be superspreader events.

Commissioner Rey Bulay added that there are contigency measures in place.

“Hindi tayo pwedeng bumali sa mandato ng ating Saligang Batas na elections should be held on the 9th of May 2022,” he said in the same briefing.

“Kami nandito to make sure that it does kaya nga everything’s put in place to answer for all contingencies,” Bulay added.
