The World Health Organization Philippines says that the Delta variant is now the most dominant variant of COVID-19 in the Philippines, driving the surge in cases in recent days.
“The information we have clearly shows that now, already, the Delta variant has emerged as the dominant variant,” Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, WHO Philippines country representative, said in a media briefing.
She added that 70% of the cases are attributed to the Delta variant based on the latest genome sequencing conducted by the Philippine Genome Center and Department of Health (DOH).
The WHO official also said that there is clear indication that there is now community transmission in the country.
“With this kind of transmission, with these kinds of numbers, we are in community transmission of the Delta variant,” he added.
The country has recorded 22,366 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, the highest so far since the start of the pandemic.
