3 Pinoy boxers who bagged Olympic medals to receive Congressional Medal of Distinction

The three Filipino boxers who bagged medals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will receive a Congressional Medal of Distinction from the House of Representatives.

This came after House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, Majority Leader Martin Romualdez, and Minority Leader Joseph Stephen Paduano filed House Resolution No. 2093 which seeks to congratulate, commend, and confer the Congressional Medal of Distinction to boxer Nesthy Petecio who won a silver medal in women’s boxing in the Olympics.

A similar resolution will be filed for boxers Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial who also respectively bagged a silver and bronze medal in the men’s boxing flyweight and middleweight categories.

Velasco said winning a medal at the Olympics “was no easy feat as our boxers had to compete against the best athletes in the world.”

“Nesthy, Carlo and Eumir are considered as our national heroes in sports,” Velasco said in a statement.

The Congressional Medal of Distinction is given to Filipino achievers in sports, business, medicine, science, and other fields.

It was the same award given by Congress to weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz five years ago when she won a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The Philippines ended its historic 2020 Tokyo Olympics campaign as the top performing country among Southeast Asian nations. The country finished its Olympics run with one gold medal, two silvers, and one bronze.

To recall, Diaz won the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal after conquering the women’s 55 kilograms weightlifting competition.
