A local restaurant in Cavinti, Laguna has started using ‘tampipi’ made from pandan leaves as a way to help local weavers in the province.
BrickOven has decided to take the sustainable alternative not only to help the environment, but also the local weavers whose livelihoods have been affected by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Owner Denisse Porca said this initiative started when their cardboard boxes ran out amid their delivery operations, due to the lockdown measures implemented in Metro Manila.
According to her, she thought that since the area’s primary industry was hat weaving, they can request the weavers to make pizza boxes instead—a win-win situation for both parties.
She said that they were impressed with the prototype made by the locals that they have decided to continue its use for their pizzas.
Because of this initiative, she said local weavers now have an extra source of income amid the pandemic. At the same time, she added that they are helping the environment through the use of eco-friendly materials.
