Driverless vehicles were already tested ahead of its planned deployment in the UAE.
According to Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, the Director-General of the UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), 5G network was provided in a place away from the city in Dubai [Dubai Silicone Oasis] for the testing of these vehicles.
In a report by Emirates News Agency (WAM), these 5G-enabled driverless vehicles will be able to have more efficient and quick communication with each other and traffic infrastructure, which will help minimize traffic jams and bottlenecks.
The 5G technology can also enable these vehicles to identify traffics conditions and potential dangers quickly.
Al Mansoori says they are planning to expand the 5G network to important sectors such as transport, health, and education.
WAM earlier reported that the rollout of these vehicles will still be in 2021. However, Al Mansoori said that sectors like health may not need to wait for the scheduled rollout. They may instead approach the provider to get it immediately.
Al Mansoori says the hospitals would need 5G for conducting remote surgeries and universities would also need it for research.
