The elusive Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis) appeared again after 27 years in the mountainous area of Mt. Calavite Wildlife Sanctuary in Occidental, Mindoro.
The endangered tamaraw is like a carabao but with smaller and shorter horns that grow into a ‘v shape’ form. It’s color ranges from dark brown to gray and darker than normal carabaos.
At least 6 Tamaraws are reportedly roaming around the area.
The Tamaraws were last seen in the sanctuary in 1992.
Research expeditions in 2010 and 2013 were able to observe tracks but did not get an actual encounter with the elusive Tamaraws.
The sighting of the rare Tamaraw means that the sanctuary must work harder in order to protect the elusive species.
