Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes today led officials and staff of the Consulate as well as Filipino community leaders in a solemn flag-raising ceremony marking the 121st Philippine Independence Day.
This year’s celebrations will be highlighted by a display of the Philippine flag at the iconic Burj Khalifa tower in central Dubai, and lights and sounds show at Dubai Festival City Mall, to be held on the evening of June 12 with subsequent re-runs in the following days.
“That both DFC and the Burj Khalifa are commemorating our Independence Day in terms of customizing lights and sounds according to the Philippine flag and colors is a testament to the confidence and acknowledgment of the entire UAE community of the influence and contribution of the Filipinos in this society,” Cortes told The Filipino Times.
“Ours is not simply to highlight our culture, arts, and heritage but to contextualize it in terms of a larger global community such as that of the UAE’s.
“In a multicultural world such as here, we always need to keep in mind that our celebrations of who we are as a people comes within a larger sphere of humanity. The theme of the Filipino community in the Dubai celebration of Independence Day is in this mindset so that not only are we to inspire other Filipinos of our contributions to society but also to inspire other migrant communities to be the best that they can also be,” he added.
