Dubai has once again proven its expertise with the latest technology, this time in the field of health as expert from the Dubai Health Authority’s (DHA) Primary Healthcare Center and Rashid Hospital masterfully made use of 3D printing technology to help save a young student’s life.
The DHA worked together with 3D printing health care start-up Sinterex to help save the jaw of a young student who had been battling an aggressive tumour.
According to DHA’s Maxilofacial Surgeon Dr. Khaled Ghandour, the patient was diagnosed with Ossifying Fibroma which forced the decision to remove the right side of the jaw, as per a report from Khaleej Times.
The Process
After doing a CT scan of the patient, the prints were segmented and converted into a 3D-printed physical model. This model allowed the Dr. Gandour together with his team of surgeons, to work carefully inspect the patient’s situation and develop a treatment plan.
After finalizing the treatment plan, Sinterex came in to 3D print the surgical guide for the patient. This surgical guide was then used to fit into the patient in the operating theatre to ensure precision on the part of the surgeons involved in drilling and cutting.
A customized, patient-specific implant was 3D-printed in bio-compatible medical grade Titanium.
This wasn’t the first case that the DHA made use of 3D printing – other cases included a prosthetic leg, removal of a cancerous growth from a patient’s kidney through referencing a 3D model, and the saving of the life of a patient suffering with cerebral aneurysm.
