Dubai rolls out flexible summer work schedule for government employees

The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) has launched the 2026 edition of its “Our Flexible Summer” initiative, offering government employees more flexible work arrangements during the summer months.

The program will run from June 29 to September 10, 2026 and introduces two work models aimed at promoting employee well-being while maintaining government productivity and service delivery.

Under the first model, employees will work seven hours a day from Monday to Thursday and four-and-a-half hours on Fridays. The second model allows employees to work eight hours a day from Monday to Thursday, with Fridays designated as a day off.

Government entities may also implement remote working arrangements depending on operational requirements.

Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director General of DGHR, said the initiative has shown that employee well-being and quality of life can go hand in hand with strong workplace performance.

“The ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative has demonstrated that employee wellbeing and quality of life do not come at the expense of performance. On the contrary, they are among the key enablers of institutional success and long-term sustainability,” Al Falasi said.

He added that the initiative supports the development of more flexible and people-centered government workplaces while enhancing employee experience and strengthening the readiness of government institutions for future challenges.

According to Al Falasi, the program reflects Dubai’s broader approach to governance, which prioritizes people and invests in talent as a driver of productivity, innovation, and sustainable performance.

The initiative is also aligned with the objectives of the UAE’s “Year of Family,” which promotes a healthier balance between work, family responsibilities, and social commitments while ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality public services.

Dubai first introduced flexible summer work arrangements in government offices as part of broader efforts to enhance workplace well-being and modernize public sector employment practices.
