BREAKING: House panel votes 70-11 denying ABS-CBN’s new 25-year franchise

The Philippines’ House of Representatives has voted to deny granting Philippine media giant ABS-CBN another 25-year franchise, following weeks of hearings and deliberations that began late May.

Winning the majority vote of 70-11, lawmakers effectively scrapped all bills filed in the Congress that would have granted a franchise for the embattled media conglomerate.

ABS-CBN’s broadcasting operations stopped around two months ago when their 25-year franchise expired, following the cease and desist order from the National Telecommunications Commission.

The media giant’s digital transmissions through Sky Direct and TV Plus programs were also discontinued following an order from the NTC last June 30.
