Spain’s Princess Maria Teresa died yesterday of coronavirus, becoming the world’s first royal family member who died from the pandemic disease.
The 86-year-old princess of the Bourbon-Parma Royal Family is the cousin of Spanish King Felipe IV who tested negative earlier this month.
“On this afternoon… our sister Maria Teresa de Borbon Parma and Borbon Busset, victim of the coronavirus COVID-19, died in Paris at the age of eighty-six,” her brother Prince Sixto Enrique de Borbon, the Duke of Aranjuez, announced.
People Magazine described Princess Maria Teresa as a longtime advocate of women’s rights, was fascinated with Islam that she studied and fought eventually for Muslim women’s rights. She was nicknamed “Red Princess” for being a socialist activist.
Her death came as Spain’s coronavirus deaths skyrocketed to almost 6,000 today.
Prince Charles, 71, of the British Royal Family and Prince Albert of Monaco, 62, were earlier confirmed to be the first royals to have been tested positive for the virus.
