Greta Thunberg sets record as the youngest ‘Time Person of the Year’ — Guinness

Guinness World Records (GWR) said Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has just set a record, having become the youngest “Time Person of the Year.”

Announced on NBC’s Today programme on 10 Dec, Thunberg is the cover star on the Dec 23-30 edition   of the prestigious US news publication, at which point she will be aged 16 years 354 days.

Thunberg became globally popular in August last year when she lobbied the Swedish government to step up its environmental commitments by pledging to reduce carbon emissions.

This inspired other youngsters around the world to strike from school to participate in anti-climate change demonstrations, a movement which came to be known as “FridaysForFuture,” GWR said in a post on ots website.

This year, Thunberg met with several government officials and gave speeches at major conferences, among them the UN Climate Action Summit held recently in New York City, USA back in September this year. She has also been shortlisted for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. This, however, ended up going to the Ethiopian prime minister, Abiy Ahmed  for his peace efforts with rival Eritrea.

Started in 1927, the “Person of the Year” is a special end-of-year annual edition of the US news magazine Time, in which the organization celebrates a person, group of people or even object that “for better or for worse… has done the most to influence the events of the year”.

The plaudit was originally split into “Man of the Year” and “Woman of the Year”, before being amalgamated to “Person of the Year” in 1999.
