Saudi ends gender-segregated restaurant exits

Saudi Arabia will no longer require restaurants to segregate entrances for male and female customers, the kingdom’s Ministry of Municipalities and Rural Affairs announced on Twitter.

Restaurants in Saudi Arabia were previously mandated to have one entrance for families and women, and another for men on their own. In practice though, other restaurants, cafes, concert halls and other meeting places are no longer enforcing it.

Still, observers hail this as another milestone in Saudi Arabia’s efforts towards social reforms.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has eased other restrictions in recent months, including bans on women driving and public entertainment, and travel abroad without a male guardian’s permission.

It is yet clear though if the segregation will also apply to schools and hospitals.
