Phone scammers have become bolder and resorted to scare tactics to extort money from people.
Reports said that residents have lost hundreds of thousands of dirhams due to phone scamming activities.
Most of the phone scammers call their victims on WhatsApp to tell them that their ATM and credit cards are blocked.
UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) told Khaleej Times that they are doing a social media campaign to inform mobile users about the phone scams.
Scammers said that the most common reason given to victims is failure to update card information.
“The numbers are not toll free and usually from places that are off-the-grid. The caller is charged instantly so it is very impor-tant not to call them back,” the TRA told Khaleej Times.
The TRA is working closely with authorities to crack down the scammers.
