A historic first for both leaders as United States President Donald Trump stepping into North Korean soil as he meets Kim Jong Un at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Sunday.
The DMZ is a military border dividing the two Koreas for decades. It is considered to be one of the most tension filled sites in the world.
The two leaders shook hands and later on walked to the North Korean territory and shook hands again for photo journalists.
Kim and Trump went back to Seoul’s territory where they were joined by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
“It’s a great day for the world and it’s an honor for me to be here,” Trump said.
The DMZ meeting took place after Trump issued the invitation on Twitter.
Negotiations between North Korea and U.S over nuclear weapons remain in deadlock since their last meeting in Vietnam.
“If Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!,” Trump said.
North Korea responded by saying that the invitation was a very “interesting suggestion.”
Analysts say it remains to be seen on what can this meeting achieve towards denuclearization or will it end into just another media spectacle.
