Fired FDA chief hints she was victim of political maneuverings

DUBAI: Food and Drugs Administrator Nela Charade Puno is at a lost why President Duterte, who appointed her to the post, has sacked her, citing allegations of corruption, hinting the chief executive might have been ill-advised on the decision to unseat her, The Filipino Times (TFT) learned.

“I take exception to the mention of… ‘corruption,’” said Puno in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by TFT. “I am clueless to what these are.”

She explained: “I have not been charged in any legal proceedings nor am I aware of any official investigations being undertaken in relation to corruption involving me.”

Puno said that during her administration, FDA gained three ISO certifications, an international standards body on quality management systems; and ASEAN recognition as the fifth member whose regulatory standards were so accredited.

“I served as the director general of the FDA for two years and 10 months with complete honesty, diligence, dedication and loyalty,” said Puno, adding that she, during her term, implemented the decentralization… of FDA, the digitalization of its registration processes, the support to medium and small enterprises with Trade and Industry, and the strict regulatory enforcement of FDA laws with the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“In addition to these accomplishments, I have consciously and vigorously resisted the regulatory capture of the FDA,” said Puno.

“I leave FDA with a clear conscience and what I believe to be a clean record,” she added.

“It is completely unnecessary to sully the personal and professional reputations of people who sacrifice to render public service.”

Puno, who was fired on Thursday, May 16. Malacañang did not state the exact reason why Puno was fired but it said the move was part of Duterte’s campaign against corruption in government. (Rappler photo)
