Know The Law: Dh 500,000 fine for Privacy Breach on Minors

While the age of technology has made life more convenient, it has also raised concerns for parents when it comes to the privacy of their children.

The UAE, in the subject of protecting the privacy of its citizens especially minors, reminds the public that filming children at public areas without getting the permission of parents will result to fines from Dh 150,000 – Dh 500,000 along with a jail term of six months or more depending on the severity of the privacy breach, reports Khaleej Times.

Actions punishable by law include, but aren’t limited to, the following:

– Filming persons

– Recording audio

– Recording phone calls

Persons who will conduct unauthorized distribution, copying, keeping and/or exposing the content stated above, even if they were true, will be held liable under the Federal Law No. 5/2012.

Such acts will be considered as a breach on the privacy of the child, regardless of how harmless the content might be as it’s considered as an act of exposing the child’s modesty as the photo may be used by other people for malicious content.
