House panel approves proposals to rename Clark Airport after Diosdado Macapagal

The committee on transportation of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, October 10, approved the two bills proposing to rename the Clark International Airport to Diosdado Macapagal International Airport.

House Bills 2274 and 8289 were approved in the House panel level after the provincial government of Pampanga expressed its support towards the proposal.

The bills seeks to commemorate accomplishments and contributions of former president Diosdado Macapagal who was the first president of the Philippines from Pampanga.

“[Macapagal] is a Filipino with sterling legacy and incomparable distinction as a respected leader, champion of the poor, true statesman, and a nationalist of unquestionable integrity,” the explanatory note of House Bill 8289 read.

HB 2274, authored by Pampanga Representative Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales, has been pending before the committee since August 8, 2016. Meanwhile, HB 8289, filed by House Majority Leader and Camarines Sur 1st District Rep. Rolando Andaya Jr., Sagip Rep. Rodante Marcoleta, Pampanga 1st District Rep. Carmelo Lazatin II, and Bohol 3rd District Rep. Arthur Yap, was submitted on September 25, 2018.

Macapagal is the father of current House speaker and former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
