Veloso family to visit detained OFW Mary Jane in Indonesia

The family of the OFW Mary Jane Veloso, who is currently on death row in Indonesia, is set to fly to Jakarta on Tuesday, September 11, to visit her.

Veloso’s father, Cesar and his sons, Daniel and Darren, will be present during the prison visit schedules on September 14 and 15, reported PNA.

Upon arrival in Indonesia, the family will be attending the Interfaith Mission for Solidarity and Service with Migrants, Refugees and Uprooted People from September 11 to 13.

Veloso’s family will fly to Indonesia following the submission of a petition seeking the approval of the Supreme Court (SC) to allow the OFW to testify against her illegal recruiters for her illegal drug trafficking case.

A petition filed by the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) on Veloso’s behalf seeks to reverse the Court of Appeals (CA) earlier decision to not allow Veloso to testify against her illegal recruiters Ma. Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao who are also detained in the Philippines.

The plea explains that Veloso could testify against her illegal recruiters through a deposition, a written testimony from the detained OFW from her cell.

Veloso was apprehended for unknowingly bringing over two kilograms of heroin inside her luggage in 2010. In her defense, Veloso said she did not know there were illegal drugs in her luggage and accused her recruiters of duping her.

Veloso’s death sentence was put on hold in April 2015 after then president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino’s plea to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
