Tito Sotto elected as new Senate President

The Senate has elected minority leader Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III as new Senate President on Monday afternoon, May 21.

Sotto, the 29th Senate President, has replaced Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III after a resolution signed by 16 senators surfaced seeking for a reorganization in the Upper Chamber.

Pimentel, who stepped down from the post before the Senate plenary session, extended his gratitude towards his colleagues for the opportunity as Senate President.

Pimentel wished Sotto good luck and made his support known by saying the new Senate President has managed to solve issues within the Upper Chamber before.

“My nominee is an institution in the Senate,” said Pimentel during the plenary session. “He has been there and [has] done that in his long career in the Senate.”

Sotto’s wife, Helen Gamboa, and his children were present during the oath-taking.
