Have you visited the Dubai Mall recently? Then you may have noticed the floating sculpture installed at the Dubai Fountain.
The new installation is called ‘1.78’. It’s a representation of 1.78 microseconds, the amount of time slashed to the Earth’s day when “a single physical event shifted the earth’s mass, thus speeding up the planet’s daily rotation” as per NASA.
The sculpture, woven by American artist Janet Echelman, is also the latest addition to Echelman’s ‘Earth Time Series.’
According to the organizer’s of the display, the sculpture is made of bright polyethylene threads tied in over 600,000 knots over a 124 kilometer-string.
Do not be deceived by the seemingly weak strength of strings though as the whole structure is 15 times stronger than steel by weight.
A new art piece has made its way to The Waterfront Promenade. ‘1.78’ is a colourful floating sculpture by @JanetEchelman and the latest addition to the art hub of @MyDowntownDubai. #ArtEmaar #TheDubaiMall pic.twitter.com/We4lf7DrP9

The structure is also recommended to be seen during nighttime since the colored lights covering the strings take the structure to a whole new level.
