RTA enables use of smartphones to pay for taxi fares in Dubai

Good news for taxi commuters in Dubai! Aside from credit cards, passengers can now use their phones to pay their cab fares.

This comes after RTA allowed the use of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay as a new taxi payment scheme.

The scheme has been introduced and enabled in the UAE last year and has recently been enabled in cabs through Network International. It is the same company which provides RTA card payment solutions.

There are currently 8,000 taxicabs using this technology.

Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA Public Transport Agency, said the new service is part of Dubai’s Smart City initiative.

He also added that the move was fueled by their goal of making everyday commute seamless and hassle-free.

“The service is aimed to offer taxi riders smooth payment options that raise their satisfaction and happiness,” Bahrozyan said.

“We aim to broaden the scope of the service to cover a larger number of taxi users,” he added.
