Duterte gifts 12-ton dressed chicken to Marawi soldiers

President Rodrigo Duterte has never failed to express support to government troops who are battling for freedom in the war-torn Marawi City.

This time, by providing them with better food while in combat.

Department of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol announced that the first shipment of 11,874 kilograms (11.87 tons) of frozen dressed chicken arrived in Misamis Oriental.

A total of 2.4 tons of chicken are on its way to Marawi, while five more deliveries are expected in the next weeks.

Piñol said the move also aims to assist businessmen in the poultry industry, who suffered a decline in demand because of the bird flu outbreak in Pampanga.

The bird flu outbreak has caused an oversupply, which led to a drop in chicken prices from P50 to P10 per head.

He added the chicken were supposed to delivered to Marawi evacuees, but was opposed by Maranao leaders because of health concerns.

“This was, of course, an unfounded claim because all of the chicken in the bird flu affected areas were actually killed and disposed,” Piñol said in a statement.
