Mother of drowned Ateneo player renews call for justice

The mother of the late Rene Baterbonia on Wednesday renewed her appeal for justice, one month after her son drowned during an Ateneo Blue Eagles team-building activity in Aurora.

Baterbonia and teammate Divine Adili died after drowning during the activity on June 8.

In a Facebook post, Baterbonia’s mother, Rovelyn, appealed to those who know what happened to come forward.

“It has been one month since my son was killed, and there is still no justice. I hope justice will finally be served,” she wrote.

She also urged those involved to tell the truth about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.

The incident remains under separate investigations by government agencies and Ateneo de Manila University.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group has recommended that the Department of Justice file charges for alleged violations of the Anti-Hazing Act against former Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin and 10 other members of the coaching staff.

The CIDG also recommended filing homicide and reckless imprudence resulting in homicide charges against Baldwin and eight others in connection with the deaths.
