UAE warns drug syndicates are using social media, gaming platforms to target youth

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has raised alarm over the growing use of social media, messaging applications, online gaming platforms, and other digital channels by drug trafficking networks to target young people.

Authorities said criminal groups are increasingly exploiting online platforms to lure the youth into illegal drug activities, prompting the government to intensify its prevention and awareness campaigns across the country.

Led by the Ministry of Interior and police forces, including Abu Dhabi Police, the UAE’s anti-drug strategy combines public education, law enforcement, and community partnerships to curb drug-related crimes and protect vulnerable sectors, particularly the youth.

As part of the campaign, awareness programs have been expanded to schools, universities, shopping malls, and community events to educate the public on the health, social, and legal consequences of illegal drug use.

Brigadier Taher Gharib Al Dhaheri, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, said prevention remains the country’s first line of defense against drug abuse.

He said awareness initiatives also help parents recognize early signs of addiction, encourage individuals to seek treatment voluntarily, and educate communities on how to report suspected drug dealers.

Authorities continue to urge the public to ignore suspicious online messages promoting illegal drugs and to report such activities through official channels.

Alongside prevention efforts, Abu Dhabi Police continue intelligence-led operations against drug trafficking syndicates.

In one recent operation, authorities arrested two suspects after seizing 184 kilograms of narcotics concealed inside marble cylinders, preventing the illegal drugs from reaching the market.

The UAE also continues to offer rehabilitation through its “Chance of Hope” program, which provides confidential treatment and support for individuals recovering from drug addiction.

Officials stressed that combating illegal drugs requires the combined efforts of families, schools, media organizations, and the wider community to safeguard future generations.
