The Department of Education (DepEd) has reminded public schools nationwide that the use of gadgets during class hours remains prohibited, except for educational and emergency purposes.
In a memorandum issued Wednesday, DepEd emphasized that the policy is in line with DepEd Order No. 6, series of 2026, or the Guidelines on Ensuring a Safe and Motivating Learning Environment (ESMLE), which aims to promote the safe and responsible use of the internet and electronic devices in schools.
According to the Office of the Secretary, the order “expressly prohibits the use of portable electronic devices during instructional hours by both learners and personnel.”
The ban covers activities such as using social media, playing online games, creating content, and vlogging while classes are ongoing.
DepEd clarified, however, that gadgets may still be used for legitimate educational purposes, including accessing learning platforms, digital resources, and participating in teacher-authorized online collaborative activities.
The use of electronic devices is also permitted during emergencies, such as disasters, medical incidents, or other situations requiring immediate communication for safety.
To ensure compliance, DepEd directed all field offices and public schools to strengthen information campaigns promoting the responsible use of the internet and electronic devices among learners and school personnel.
