Dubai Customs foils endangered wildlife smuggling at airport

The Dubai Customs has foiled an attempt to smuggle rare and endangered wildlife through Dubai International Airport after officers intercepted a suspicious luggage item during routine screening.

Authorities said an Asian passenger arriving in the UAE was flagged after scanning systems detected unusual contents in her suitcase, prompting a detailed manual inspection.

During the search, customs officers reportedly found a concealed basket containing rare bears. The animals were later confirmed by a duty veterinarian to be dead and classified as a rare and endangered species protected under international conservation rules.

The case was immediately escalated, with Dubai Customs coordinating with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. The matter was also referred to Dubai Police’s Environmental Crimes Unit for further investigation.

In her statement, the passenger said she received the suitcase in exchange for payment and was instructed to deliver it upon arrival, claiming she was expecting to be contacted by another individual—an indication, authorities said, of a trafficking method that uses unwitting couriers.

Officials said the case falls under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which regulates the international trade of endangered wildlife to prevent exploitation and protect biodiversity.

Dubai Customs officials said the incident highlights the effectiveness of advanced scanning technology and trained officers in detecting concealed smuggling attempts, even when items appear ordinary.

Authorities also warned the public against accepting or transporting unknown luggage or packages, stressing that individuals can be held legally accountable if used in illegal trafficking operations.
