Actress Liza Soberano has reacted to a surge of online apologies from netizens after her past remarks criticizing the entertainment industry’s love team system resurfaced amid renewed public discussion.
Soberano took to X after users began messaging her to apologize for the backlash she faced in 2023, when she described love teams as “dangerous.” The renewed attention followed online debate surrounding the so-called “WilCa” controversy involving Will Ashley and Bianca de Vera, which many cited as an example of the pressures she had previously warned about.
“Why are people saying sorry to me? I’m so confused…” Soberano wrote, reacting to the sudden shift in public sentiment. When a fan commented that she had been “canceled” for her views only to be “proven right,” the actress responded with a lighthearted, “Well thank you I guess hehe.”
She later clarified that her earlier comments were misunderstood. Soberano explained that she was never able to fully elaborate on why she personally viewed love teams as harmful, which may have led people to take offense without understanding her perspective.
Her remarks originally came from an April 2023 appearance on the “Get Real” podcast, where she spoke openly about her experiences in the local entertainment industry. She said actors in love teams are often expected to portray couples both on-screen and off-screen, while being discouraged from working with other co-stars to maintain fan interest.
Soberano noted that this setup can blur personal and professional boundaries, causing confusion for audiences and emotional strain for artists. She added that many love teams are not romantically involved in real life but are discouraged from clarifying this publicly, a dynamic she described as mentally and emotionally exhausting.
Previously part of the popular “LizQuen” pairing with Enrique Gil, Soberano has since moved away from the traditional love team model and pursued projects in international film and television. She also confirmed her breakup with Gil last year.
