DOH detects 4 new Delta COVID-19 variant cases from returning overseas FIlipinos

The Department of Health in the Philippines has reported four new cases of the highly transmissible Delta COVID-19 variant first detected in India.

The total number of confirmed Delta COVID-19 cases is now at 17.

The DOH said in a statement that three of the additional Delta variant cases were from returning overseas Filipinos from the ship MV Eastern Hope. The vessel is currently docked in South Korea.

Two of them have completed the 10-day quarantine after arrival in the Philippines and were already discharged. The other one is still in a hospital in Metro Manila. They were repatriated last June 3.

The fourth Delta COVID-19 variant case came from a returning overseas Filipino from Saudi Arabia.

He arrived on May 24 and has already completed his facility based quarantine. He is set to continue his quarantine at home.

The DOH also detects an additional 14 Alpha variant cases or the variant first detected in the United Kingdom.

12 are local cases while two are being verified if they are local or returning overseas Filipinos.

There are now 1,085 Alpha COVID-19 variants or UK COVID-19 variants in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, 21 new cases of the Beta COVID-19 variant first detected in South Africa were also detected.

There are now 1,267 total Beta variant cases in the country.

DOH also reported one new case of the Theta variant or the variant first detected in the Philippines.

The case has already recovered according to the DOH. (TDT)
