COVID-19 fragments detected in 7 sewage treatment sites in Australia

Fragments of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) have been detected in sewage at seven more sites across Queensland in Australia.

The Queensland Government said these were detected at wastewater treatment plants at Condon (Townsville), Cairns South, Cairns Marlin Coast, Nambour, Maroochydore, Pulgul (Hervey Bay) and Yeppoon.

Dr. Jeanette Young, Queensland Chief Health Officer, in a report by ABC News, said the detection would mean that “someone who has been infected was shedding the virus”.

“Infected people can shed viral fragments, and that shedding can happen for several weeks after the person is no longer infectious,” she said in a statement.

Young added that this does not mean that the state has new COVID-19 cases in these communities.

However, she said they are treating this seriously.

Young urges anyone who feels unwell in these communities to get tested and isolated.

Queensland reported zero new locally acquired cases for January 25 from 6,309 tests. (ES)
